Chapter 16
1 In the thirty-sixth year of Asa's kingdom, Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and built Ramah, to prevent anyone from going out or coming in to Asa king of Judah. 2 Asa brought out silver and gold from the treasuries of the house of the LORD and the house of the king, and he sent them to Ben-hadad king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus, saying: 3 "There is a covenant between me and you, between my father and your father. Here, I have sent you silver and gold. Go, nullify your covenant with Baasha king of Israel, that he may withdraw from me." 4 And Ben-Hadad listened to King Asa and sent the chiefs of his forces to the cities of Israel, and they struck Ijon and Dan and Abel-Maim and all the store cities of Naphtali. 5 And when Baasha heard it, he ceased building Ramah and ceased his work. 6 Then Asa the king took all Judah, and they carried away the stones of Ramah and the timber Baasha had been using to build it. Asa used them to build Geba and Mizpah. 7 At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him: "Because you leaned on the king of Aram and did not lean on the LORD your God, for this reason the army of the king of Aram escaped from your hand." 8 Were not the Cushites and the Libyans a mighty force, with a great chief officer, chariots, and horsemen to a very great extent? And when you leaned on the LORD, he gave them into your hand. 9 For the eyes of the LORD range throughout all the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are completely his. You have acted foolishly in this, for from now on wars will be with you. 10 Then Asa was angry with the seer and put him in the house of the stocks because of his anger against him over this. And Asa crushed many of the people at that time. 11 And behold, the words of Asa, the first and the last, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 12 And Asa was diseased in the thirty-ninth year of his kingdom in his feet, from his disease upward; and also in his disease he did not seek the LORD but healers. 13 And Asa lay down with his fathers and died in the forty-first year of his reign. 14 And they buried him in his tombs which he had hewn for himself in the city of David, and they laid him on a bed which was filled with oils and diverse spices, mixed in a mixture, a work; and they burned for him a great burnt offering to a very great degree.
